Freedom from smoking in Monroe
Wednesday, December 20, 2006 5:38:59 PM - Monroe Ohio

by Pastor Rob Osborn

As the New Year approaches some smokers will consider resolutions like quitting cigarettes. This may be particularly true this year with Ohio’s public smoking ban going into effect in December.

An area church knows it’s crunch time for smokers and wants to help those that are looking to quit. Monroe Church of the Nazarene will be hosting a Freedom from Smoking class on Wednesdays beginning January 24th. People attending will be able to enjoy free on-site childcare from infant to teen.

“We’ve teamed up with Middletown Regional Hospital to offer the class right here in Monroe for the whole community because we know there are many people who are talking about quitting now,” said Pastor Rob Osborn.

The class will be taught by Jenny Sliger RN, MS, Community Health Educator at Middletown Regional Hospital. Sliger is certified through the American Lung Association to teach their trademark program, Freedom from Smoking (FFS).

“The philosophy of FFS is that smoking is a learned behavior, and with a positive, supportive approach, people can free themselves from this destructive habit” said Sliger.

Sliger says participants identify why they smoke, which three cigarettes of the day may be the hardest to give up, then learn a variety of tools to help them "unlearn" the behavior while dealing with the powerful effects of nicotine.

“The program boasts a 75% success rate, and I have been thrilled with the number of folks who have quit, saying this program was the answer for them after many previous attempts,” said Sliger.

The program will meet in the building next to Monroe Church of the Nazarene at 400 Macready Avenue Monroe, just across from Kroger. It will take place from January 24, through March 14. Each session is one hour long.  The total cost is $50, which includes a workbook and relaxation CD. As an added bonus each person who completes the program will receive a $10 gift card from Kroger.

People can register by calling Education Services at MRH at 420-5166, and specify they want to register for the Freedom from Smoking class to be held at the Monroe church.

Materials are ordered in advance so people must register. A person can pay when they register by check, or credit card.  If a person wants to register but is unsure until the very last minute whether they want to attend, they may bring the check on opening night.
