To honor a fellow classmate, the Monroe High class of 1975 recently opened and funded The Janine Westercamp Memorial Scholarship through the Monroe Area Community Foundation. Commencing in the spring of 2008, $250 will be awarded to a Monroe High School graduating senior who is enrolled in an accredited college or university majoring in Education, Family Services, Social Services or a related field of study.
While in high school, Janine’s interests were wide and varied, including National Honor Society, Girl’s State, Monacle (year book), Swim Team, Blue and Gold Review, Student Council, Cheerleading, Float Committee, Glee Club and Concert Choir. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Child Development from The Ohio State University in 1980. She was then employed as the Director of Park Academy, a Montessori preschool in blue Ash, Ohio. She later worked at Middletown Regional Hospital for Planned Parenthood while she was taking classes at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, to attain a Masters Degree in Family Services.
Janie accomplished all this while being diagnosed and treated for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. In April of 1988, Janine passed away due to complications from the disease. Janine had many friends of all ages and touched many people in her short life. Her classmates who knew Janine remember her positive attitude, her empathy and concern for others, her faith in God, and most of all her strength. This fund was created to honor her memory.
Applications and more information are available in the Monroe High’s counseling office. They are due by April 30, 2008.
