Monroe Garden Club May Meeting

The Monroe Garden Club held their May meeting at the James Monroe Community Room.  Hostesses for the event were Peggy Hesson and Ellen Kinsey.  Jenny Shumate was introduced as a guest.  Becky Howard, club president presided over a short business meeting.  It was announced that Tina Nguyen won a blue ribbon for horticulture, Attila tulip and several red ribbons at the Cincinnati Flower Show.  Several planting projects in the city were discussed and will be announced when the projects are completed. The club also presented redbud tree seedlings to 3rd grade students at Monroe Elementary School on Arbor Day.  This has been a project of the club since it was founded in July 1960. Horticulture blue ribbon awards were presented to Nancy Walck for iris and Ellen Kinsey for pansy.  Ellen Kinsey also won a blue ribbon for her exhibit, “May Flowers are Blooming”.  Pauline Belcher presented the program on “Preserving Flowers”.  Several methods of preserving flowers including Pressing, Hang and Dry Method, Drying flowers in Silica jel and Glycerin & Water, examples of each and best flowers for each method were given.  The next meeting will be a Tour of Daylily Farm, at the Top O’Hill Daylily Farm in Oxford with Joanne Means on Tuesday, June 21, 2005 at 7: 00 PM.  Club members will carpool from the City Building at 6:30 p.m.   Guests are always welcome.
