Monroe Golfers off to State!
Friday, October 05, 2001 12:00:00 AM - Monroe Ohio
Senior Dustin Talbot added a 79 for the Hornets, who totaled 319 to edge second-place Kettering Alter by three shots. The top two teams qualified for state. Seniors Matt Waidmann(80) and Justin McGraw(84), and freshman Aaron Crist(84) rounded out the state-qualifying team for Monroe.
Much debate was given to Hunts relief taken at the No. 5 Highlands. Hunt‘s approach shot to the 360-yard par-4 ended up in what he in thought was a flower bed. flower beds are usually marked so players know whether or no relief is entitled, this area of the course was not marked. The final ruling by the director of the tournament was that he was allowed relief from the flower bed of Hastas.
Dustin Talbot landed in the exact same flower bed two groups later. He was playing two balls, and made par with the ball he dropped and a bogey with his original ball. By the time the officials had made the ruling on the flower bed, he had left the course and was unable to verify his score change from a 5 to a 4. His 78 will forever be remembered as a 79 in the the record books.
Monroe competes for a first-ever state golf crown October 12th and 13th at the Ohio State University‘s Gray Course.
