Monroe Says Goodbye To A Special Someone
Monday, September 19, 2011 10:20:33 AM - Monroe Ohio

by Bobby King

Around the 1930's, Monroe schools were looking to find their rhythm, and with the rhythm comes a football team.  And, everyone knows what comes with football.. THE FIGHT SONG!  The Monroe Local School's fight song and alma mater was arranged, written and arranged by Charles Benner who recently passed away at the age of 99.  At the Monroe football game on September 16th, 2011, a moment of silence was observed in honor of Mr. Benner, along with the playing of both the fight song, and the alma mater.

Mr. Benner's first teaching job was in 1937 at Lemon Township Elementary School.    His principal who would later become the superintendent, Calvin Young, requested that Benner start an instrumental group as a club. Its success led to requests from other elementary principals for him to teach instrumental music in their schools, so he became an itinerant music teacher.  Mr. Benner commented that Mr. Young "bought an instrument himself and became a part of the learning process."  In the middle of Mr. Benner's teaching career, he entered the war and fought in World War II.  After the war was over, he went back and continued to teach.

Although I did not know Mr. Benner, he definitely has a special place in my heart for being such a great person.  Although the Monroe Hornets did not win the game this evening (Franklin Wildcats: 40, Monroe Hornets: 0), it was definitely a tribute to play both the alma mater and the fight song in his honor.  He will be greatly missed!
