No New Grocery Store for Monroe
Friday, June 08, 2001 12:00:00 AM - Monroe Ohio
Today at the Monroe Business Council meeting, Jay T. Stewart, Director of Development for the City of Monroe, said that the ‘proposed grocery store idea was dead.‘ This is due in large part to the lack of carry out beer license availability. Our population needs to grow to 9000 before another carry our beer license will be granted to the city. The current population is just over 7000. When asked what happened to all the carry out licenses, Mr. Steward suggested the 7 gas stations in town all have beer sales and have used up all available licenses. The only way Monroe can attract a grocery store is for a carry our beer license to become available. Virgil Maines from Hamilton Stands recalled a time in 1957 when Monroe was ‘dry‘ (Liquor sales were forbidden).
