Open Enrollment Continues for 2004-05 School Year
Tuesday, March 09, 2004 1:26:09 PM - Monroe Ohio
Open Enrollment will continue for 7-12th graders for the next school year. Monday night the school board approved 4-1 to keep open enrollment. Superintendent Arnol Elam recommended we keep open enrollment for the junior and high schools but not the elementary school. Mr. Elam presented statistics supporting his position that Monroe should keep open enrollment during the next school year. Total enrollment levels are well below the capacity of the districts new facilities and the number of open enrollees has declined in the past four years. Open enrollment contributes to the number of course studies a school can have. Also extracurricular activities are better with a larger student body.

Sharon Moon, School Treasurer presented state funding related to open enrollment amounts to 8 percent of the total district funding or approximately $943K.

Open enrollment will be reconsidered each year due to the growing Monroe community. Monroe's current growth rate will fill schools to capacity and may require additional new facilities as soon as 2010.
