Ray Belcher new Monroe grid coach

Ray Belcher, an assistant coach at Monroe for the past 17 years, has been named new head football coach of the hornets replacing Jerry Harkrader.

Belcher, an Occupational Work Education teacher at Monroe, will be recommended by the Middletown School District administration to the school board at the August 12 meeting.

Harkrader notified the school he would be unable to coach the Hornets this season due to a serious illness. Harkrader had just been named to the Monroe post in June, replacing Gene Rice.

The school administration moved quickly on naming a successor to Harkrader since first workouts begin August 4.

The appointment of Belcher was confirmed with the athletic committee of Ebie Banks, Fred Sennett, Gene Best, Lew Hill and superintendent Paul Kuhn.

"The administration was shocked and very saddened to hear of the situation regarding Jerry Harkrader," Kuhn said. "We hope everything works out all right."

Belcher is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and received his Masters degree from Xavier University.

"I hate the circumstances concerning the job," he said. "I would gladly give it up if it would help Jerry".

Belcher said he plans to have some sort of team meeting, but he wasn‘t sure just when. Team physicals are set for Wednesday and he said he might plan a meeting at that time.

"Obviously, I‘ve got a lot of work to do in a very short time," he said.
