There are 10 positions left open with SunCoke’s Middletown operations, but they have candidates. The Middletown operations will have a total 115 hourly and salary jobs paying nearly $10 Million in wages, salaries and benefits per year.

The plant broke ground in the spring of 2010 and will produce 550K tons of coke for it's only customer and largest employer in Middletown, AK Steel.

Plans originally called for building a cogeneration plant to capture hot gas from the coke ovens to make steam and generate about 50 megawatts of electricity.

But due in part to a lawsuit from the City of Monroe and other political groups, the Ohio Supreme Court reversed the company’s first certificate required for plants that make 50 megawatts of power or more. Modifications were made to the plant to produce 46 megawatts instead, which increased construction costs.

As a result, the plant is expected to cost $30 Million more than originally, with the final projection approaching $400 Million. This is the largest private construction project in Ohio with construction jobs going to electrical, plumber, bricklayer and other trade union workers.
