The purpose of the Monroe Historical Society is to preserve the history of Monroe and the Monroe area.  The Society was formally organized in 1967 as a part of the Sesquicentennial celebration of the village of Monroe established in 1817.

Buildings and Projects

The “1910 Building” and the Museum are located next door to each other at the corner of Elm and Main.  The third building maintained by the Society is the Log Cabin which is in the Monroe Community Park.

The Museum opened in 2000.  The site was donated by Jim Price and the building was financed by donations including matching funds from General Electric.  The sidewalk in front of the building is paved with bricks containing the names of people who bought the bricks as part of the fundraising for the structure.

The 1910 Building is presently undergoing extensive restoration and renewal including lighting, walls, and floors.  When finished, the building will have the character of the small general store that it once was and will display goods from the museum collection.

A current project of the group is the roofing of the Log Cabin.  The Log Cabin (Ca 1797-1817) was discovered within the structure of a house that was being torn down to make way for a proposed auto plant in 1967.  The cabin portion was carefully preserved and reassembled at its present site.  It was dedicated in 1971.

An ongoing project of the organization is a yearly replica of a historic building in Monroe.  Past replicas (there have been 10) include among others, the Brandywine Inn, the Log Cabin, and Monroe United Presbyterian Church.  Some remain and are for sale at the Museum.

Museum Collection

The museum collection is varied.  A living room, dining room, and bedroom are furnished largely with furniture and glassware donated by Opal and Irvin Singer from the Singer family home.  Another room is devoted to a changing exhibit.   Another section contains history and genealogical material covering the area.  Additionally, the museum has a sizeable collection of vintage clothing.  Also in the collection are original plows invented in Monroe.  In addition, a 1929 fire engine from the Monroe Fire Department will soon be housed in the museum.

Meetings

A variety of quality programs of historical interest are held quarterly.  In the past two years programs have included collecting buttons and buckles, enhancing old photographs, appraising antiques, Cincinnati Reds history and museum, and blue grass music.
