The 5th Grade Hornets
Win Their 1st Game
|
|
The 5th Grade Hornets won their 1st game on Saturday October 14 vs. Ross.
It was a very exciting finish. Ross scored with 45 seconds left and made their two-point conversion to put them up 14-6.But the Hornets didn't give
up. Tyler Osterman completed a screen pass to Braden McMonigle for a two yard gain and then the Rams jumped off sides for a five yard
penalty. The Hornets were on the 42 yard line with 58 yards to go and enough time left for one
play. They sent three receivers to the
right (Adam Osterman, JB Carroll, Braden
McMonigle) , Tyler Osterman dropped back to
pass, after scrambling around for a few seconds dodging defenders he threw the ball as far as he could to a wide open McMonigle who caught the ball and raced the remaining yards for the score.
However, the Hornets were still down 2 points with no time left on the
clock. They needed to make their two point
conversion. Again they sent three receivers to the right but this time JB Carroll lined up at left Tight-End and Tyler Osterman faked to the right and threw to a wide open JB Carroll in the end zone for the tie 14-14.The Hornets won the toss in overtime and six plays later Adam Osterman scored on a two yard run with an extra effort dive to put the ball over the
goal-line. Ross then got their chance to answer but a stingy Hornet defense shut them down on four straight
plays. Chandler Hymer and Adam Osterman shut down the first two running plays and on third and fourth down the Hornet pass defense did the
same. Billy Trick, Daniel Lewis, and Hymer put pressure on the
Quarterback and Josh Gillen, JB Carroll, Kevin
Jones, and Braden McMonigle kept their receivers from getting open as the Rams final attempts fell incomplete.
It was a total team win for the Hornets with everyone
contributing. The 5th Grade Hornets are coached by Greg
Gillen, Mark Osterman, Norb Lewis,
Scott Trick, Jim Petrie, and Harry Finch.
The players are Brandon Howard,
Chandler Hymer, Kevin Enchelmeyer,
Brett Richter, Jimmy Petrie, Billy
Trick, Dennis Majors, Casey Hinkle,
Ryan Lee, Ernie Hinkle, Kevin Jones,
Brandon Sewell, Tyler Osterman, Josh
Gillen, Shane Brazelton, Braden
McMonigle, Adam Osterman, Daniel
Lewis, Jake Ruckman, JB Carroll.

Striker Girls Run Into Hardship at
Competition
|
|
On Saturday October 7, the Monroe Striker Girls Team, Meeker & Meeker,
traveled to Clinton Massie in hopes of competing in a quality league game. Instead poor refereeing and a total lack of sportsmanship greeted the team. During the game several Monroe injuries took place, five to be exact. All were due in part to over physical play by the opposing team, only one of which was illegal, at least according to Clinton Massie officials. Despite great play from all the Meeker & Meeker players, the team fell by a score of 3-0. Monroe Coach B.J. Smallwood commended his team by saying he was never more proud of his players for their hard work and for never giving up. He said they did a great job of maintaining their composure the entire game, and understands it's hard to have fun when others don't want you
too. However, on Sunday October 8, the team again played away from their home field at Monroe Community Park, in Franklin. The game Sunday was much better than the previous day's game. Again Meeker & Meeker fell, this time by a score of 1-0 in a game dominated by defense. The Monroe defense got a great game from everyone including normal midfielder, Jeralyn Hidlebaugh, who stepped up and played great at fullback. Monroe's offense had several great opportunities to score, but could get the ball to bounce in their direction. This weekend Monroe has two more games, one of which is a rematch against a fellow Monroe rival team coached by Michelle Pokora. In the last meeting Meeker & Meeker fell by a score of 4-2. They also play another Franklin team which they beat 3-0 in their opening game of the season.

The
Stingers and Hamilton Meet in Brutal
Competition
|
|
The battle for the pride of Monroe in the SAY boys Strikers division ended in a tie AGAIN on Monday night at the Monroe Community Park. Mike Morris' Stingers and Steve Maines' Hamilton Stands teams battled it out for four quarters and the final score was 1-1. The only two goals in the game were scored on penalty kicks-one by Troy Jones and the other by Tyler George. The teams had played previously this season and
this game also finished in a 1-1 tie. The Stingers remain in first place undefeated with 2 ties and Hamilton Stands in second place undefeated with 3 ties. The defense for both teams was
phenomenal preventing many fast breaks and corner kicks from becoming goals. GO STRIKER BOYS!

Soccer team Wins Labor Day Tounament
|
|
Sweating through probably the hottest weekend of the summer, the Monroe Striker Boys Hamilton Stands team coached by Steve Maines and Brian MacKenzie won three games and tied one to bring home first place trophies from a Labor Day weekend tournament at Smith Park in Middletown. Defense played a huge part in their victories as the boys were not scored against in four games.
They outscored their opponents 11-0!!
Scoring in the tournament was as
follows: 3 points for a win, 1 point
for a tie and 1 point for a shut-out.
Up to three goals per game were also
added to each team's score. The team
with the highest score after four
games won the tournament. Going into
the last game Monroe needed a win, a
shut-out and at least three goals to
take first place in the tournament.
The score at half-time was just 1-0. A
score early in the third period was
called back due to an offsides
penalty. The team never gave up,
though, and two goals by Josh Maines
and third by Tyler George gave the boys a victory and the
first place trophy! Congratulations,
Hamilton Stands!
