Boys Bowling – Submitted by Coach John Caudy (4 – 3 match, 28-28 overall):

· Varsity Bowlers this year: Adam Forkner (9), David Sorrell (9), Dan Surfus (9), Justin Fitzgerald (10), Doug Flick(10), Dan Pelfrey(10), Christian Vollmer(10), Kenneth Hummons(11), Matt Kakaris(11), Cody Neace(11) and our lone senior Tyler Rolph.

· At our 1st Annual New Year’s Tournament, the Hornets made sure everyone else felt good as the varsity team struggled on the lanes finishing in 13th place out of the 19 teams in the tournament. The current JV team was a very respectable 14th place while losing to the varsity team in the last 2 baker games. Tyler Rolph led all Hornets with a 20th place finish with a 3-game series of 584. He rolled the only 200+ game for the Varsity with a 212. Other respectable scores for the Varsity team included another 193 from Rolph, a 192 from Cody Neace and a 182 from David Sorrell.

· The Hornets traveled to Irish Country to take on the Springfield Catholic Central Fighting Irish team. They had a hard fought match that was finally decided in the 3rd and 4th Baker games with the Hornets on top 2378 – 2277. Tyler Rolph led the team with a 425 series and a team high game of 248. Matt Kakaris added a 199, and 1st time varsity bowler Dan Surfus chipped in a 152. Their 1st game total of 949 was their 2nd highest game of the season. Christian Vollmer came on in the baker games and rolled 6 strikes in 8 frames. The baker team of Forkner, Neace, Vollmer, Kakaris and Rolph put the winning touches of the night with a 200 game for only their 2nd 200 game of the season.

· The Hornets traveled to Beaver-Vu to take on Greeneview High School. We have a habit of making the matches close and this one was no different. It was settled in the 2nd and final Baker game as the Hornets held on to win the match 1998 – 1955. Leading the way and rolling his first game over 200 was freshman phenom Adam Forkner. He came on in the 2nd game and rolled a 209 and then bowled the 5-10 position for the bakers and rolled 5 strikes and a spare. Cody Neace was close with a 196 game, Christian Vollmer (189), David Sorrell (187) and Ken Hummons (175) rounded out the honor scoring.

· The Hornet Team hosted the 1st home match of the year as Lakota East came rolling into town. Maybe we have been away from home to much because the guys looked shell shocked as Lakota East trounced them by over 400 pins. Not a single bowler scored over 200. Cody Neace led the team with a 191 followed closely by Tyler Rolph (183), Kenneth Hummons (186), and Christian Vollmer (172).

· Traveled to Western Bowl to take part in the Holiday Tournament. This was the 1st time this year we were able to bowl 3 games and 6 bakers. We were interested to see how everyone would hold up. We also used some of our Fund raising money to purchases lunches for both the Girls and the Boys bowling teams. Thanks to all the Sponsors for this possibility. Cody Neace finished just outside of the awards platform with a 651 series, bowling a 224 – 193 – 234. David Sorrell had a respectable 191-179-170 for a 540 series and Tyler Rolph with a 509 series. Sorrell, Fitzgerald, Kakaris, Neace, and Rolph rolled a season high 233 in their 5th baker game. They finished 20th overall out of 34. Adam Forkner bowled a pair of 153’s while Christian Vollmer (170) and Kenneth Hummons ( 156) helped contribute to the JV teams total of 2094.

· The Hornets traveled to Pla-Mor Lanes to take on Dayton Carroll. We were on fire all night, bowling a season high 940 and 1082 for a 2022 10-game total. Matt Kakaris bowled a 226-233 for a 459 career high series. David Sorrell bowled his highest game of the season with a 234 and followed it with a 176 for a 410 series his best. Tyler “ I can’t miss” Rolph rolled a 224 – 268 for a 492 series 2nd all time in Monroe History. Cody Neace rolled a 211 and just missed a 400 series with a 394. Dan Surfus rolled a lifetime best series of 188-184 for a 372 series for the JV team. Dan Pelfrey rolled a 182 and Justin Fitzgerald rolled his first 200 game of the season with a 202. Neace, Sorrell, Rolph, Kakaris, and Forkner also rolled a great 205 3rd Baker Game.

· The Hornets had their yearly night out at the West Carrollton match. It was a close fought match and came down to the last frame where the Hornets lost by 9 pins total. We realized that Spare shooting has to be a high priority for our team if we are going to be successful in the long run. Tyler Rolph led all scorers for the Hornets with a high game of 197. Christian Vollmer shot a 181, Matt Kakaris a 182 and Justin Fitzgerald a 188 to lead the honors table. Afterwards both the boys team and the girls team enjoyed a night out at Marion’s Pizza by the Dayton Mall.

· Short trip up the road to Franklin to play them at their home house of Strike Zone. Junior Cody Neace came roaring back after having an off-day Saturday, bowling a 239 – 215 for a 454 series. That will put him the top 10 of Hornet History. Sophomore Justin Fitzgerald rolled a 193. Then our freshman class is starting to show some life with David Sorrell rolling a 170 and a 200 for a 370 series and Adam Forkner rolled a 177, as the Hornets fell to the Franklin Wildcats in a close Match.

· Traveled to Columbia Lanes for their 1st tournament experience this year. Finished 7th overall and led by Tyler Rolph and David Sorrell. Rolph finished just out of the all tournament team with his 236 and 189 for a 425 series. Sorrell struck for his 1st 200 game as a Hornet with a 196 and a 211 for a 407 series. Dan Pelfrey rolled a respectable series with a 176 and 173 for a 349 series. Christian Vollmer also rolled a 191 for the Hornets. They finished with a 1774 10 game series and 1050 for their 6 Baker Game total.

· Rolled past Tri-County North Timberwolves 1807 – 1603. Cody Neace - 202 and a 178 for a 380 series; David Sorrell - opened his high school career with a pair of 145’s.

Girls Bowling – Submitted by Coach John Caudy (5-2):

· Varsity Team members: Cheyenne Herd (9), Ashley Faulk (9), Roxanne Gentry (10), Kim Pence (10), Caroline Woodrome(10), Heather Baker (11), Taylor Hartman (11), Corinne Minor(12), Autumn-Sierra Holloway (12), and Beth Smalley (12).

· The 1st Annual New Years Tournament was a success from the standpoint of the varsity girls. We welcomed back Taylor Hartman from her extended absence due to her injury. The girls turned in the best performance so far this year. Their individual 5 game series ended up being their #1, #2 and #4 series for the year with a 772, 744, and a 718. Taylor Hartman finished 6th overall with a 560 3-game series bowling a 211, 148, and a 201. Autumn Sierra-Holloway was a solid performer with a 143, 169, and 174 for a 486 series. She was followed closely by Beth Smalley with a 168, 154, 138 for a 460 series. Caroline Woodrome continues to show her improvement with her 2 games of 120 and 119. Heather Baker 126 and 127 and Corinne Minor 124 and 112 rounded out the individual performances for the Hornets. The baker games continue to be an area where the girls need to focus on with games of 145, 123, 142, 115, 108, and 134. They finished with a season high 3001 points and a 6th place finish in the 16 team tournament. It was a really good showing for Monroe.

· The Lady Hornets just finished one of the most successful weeks in their bowling history. They finished 3 straight days of matches, and they won all 3. Today they finished up by beating Springfield Catholic Central (1667 – 1597) in a match that came down to the last of 4 Baker games. The Team of Baker, Woodrome, Herd, Minor, and Sierra-Holloway turn in one of their better performances this year with a 140 2nd Baker game. In individual notes, Autumn Sierra-Holloway is blazing new grounds as she continues to light up the alleys. She turned in a 337 series (156-181). Kim Pence hit her all-time match play high with a 109. Beth Smalley rolled a pair of 133 and 125 for a solid performance along with Heather Baker at 115, Corinne Minor at 117, and Caroline Woodrome at 107 as the girls advanced their match play record to 5 wins and 2 losses.

· The girls had a solid night as all 10 individual games were above 100 as the Hornets traveled to Beaver-Vu Lanes to take on the Greeneview High School. Caroline Woodrome had the high game for the Lady Hornets with a 159. She was followed closely by Autumn Sierra- Holloway with a 156 (305 series) and Heather Baker with a 140. The Final score was 1576 – 1285 as the girls made it 2 in a row this week.

· The Lady Hornets had their 1st home match of the year today as they hosted the team from Lakota East. Corinne Minor led all Hornets with a 177 – 142 for a 319 series. This is her 1st 300 series in her career. Beth Smalley (160 – 151) and Autumn Sierra Holloway ( 169 – 141) also had 300 series as well. The team game of 705 for the 2nd game was enough as they had a nail biter in the baker games but were able to hang on for the Victory 1838 – 1773.

· Autumn Sierra Holloway is on a hot streak with her bowling. She just bowled 3 games in a row over 150 with a 180 – 166 – 158 for a 504 series. This is the 4th highest 3 – game series in Monroe’s history. Caroline Woodrome shot a consistent series as well with her best 122-137-122 for a 381 series. The Baker team of Smalley, Sierra-Holloway, Woodrome, Baker, and Herd shot the 2nd highest score of 142 this year. The girls finished in the middle of the pack at the Western Bowl Tournament.

· Traveled to Pla-mor to take on Carroll. Beth Smalley shot a 147 and a 189 to tie for honors (336) with Autumn Sierra-Holloway who shot a 137 and a 199. The girls shot the best series of the year with a 622 and a 740 2-game series. They faced an unrelenting Patriots squad that shot an 888 and 956 against them. This was also the first time this season that all 10 individual games from the girls were over 100.

· The annual Marion’s Pizza night out was a great success as the Girls team clobbered West Carrollton 1507 – 1454. Beth Smalley led the girls team with a 167 and a 135 for a 302 series. She was followed close behind by Heather Baker with a 281 series. After the game they celebrated at Marion’s as they talked about upcoming events.

· The Lady Hornets traveled to Strike Zone to take on the only other team in our league, the Franklin Wildcats. They lost a close one with a 1615 – 1748 score. The girls were leading after the individual games by 5 pins but lost it in the team baker games. Beth Smalley rolled a 373 series (181,192) and Autumn Sierra-Holloway rolled a 361 series (173, 188) while Caroline Woodrome chipped in a 130 to help keep the Hornets close.

· The Lady Hornets had their eyes opened at the Big Blue Challenge at Columbia Lanes. Splits and missed opportunities ruled the day. The leading scorers were Heather Baker with a 125 game and Corinne Minor with a 124.

  • Took a long trip up to Tri County North to defeat them in their 1st match play experience of the year. They won by 222 points. Leading the way were 3 returning bowlers. Senior Beth Smalley had high honors with a 146 and a 159 for a 305 series. Junior Heather Baker was close behind with a 148 and a 152 for a 300 series. Pulse-Journal Quotes:

· Taylor Hartman: “I’m right-handed, so when I throw the ball, I put most of my weight on the follow through on my left hip. That doesn’t bother my right hip at all, and that really helps. I missed my time competing, and now things have changed. I’m excited because I know that I’m getting better every single day.”

· Coach Amy Caudy: Taylor’s a very focused bowler and a very talented bowler. From the time she took off for her injury, she was still here and mentally into the games, even though she wasn’t able to participate. Even when she is bowling, she works through a bad frame and is always focused on working ahead and getting through that next frame. She’s a major part of our team, as a bowler and a leader.”

· Transfer Zach Fugate: “I think once we start working together, we’ll do better. We all get along great. We just have to work harder as a team.”

· Coach Ferguson: “We’re still working on that chemistry. What Zach brings is athleticism. No matter who we are playing, he is always one of the most athletic kids on the floor.

· Coach Doan: “We’re getting much better. We’ve not only improved in scoring, but we’ve cut down our turnovers too.” “Where we had just one of two players scoring for us in the first few games, now we have a more balanced offense. The light has come on for many of the girls. You can see it in practice.”

· Coach Willsey: “When I first came here last season, we were down to six wrestlers on the whole team. Now we have close to 25 kids on the team. And, if we can get a few kids off the ineligible list (for grades), we’ll have every weight class filled. That alone is a major improvement over last season.”

· Coach Willsey: “We’ll probably lose a few kids this season, too, but that’s expected. Wrestling’s not an easy sport. If it were, we’d all be doing it. These guys work hard in here, and they’re learning every time they hit the mat.”

· Coach Meibers: “It’s an extremely strong schedule. Eaton and Valley View were both playoff teams last season, and Franklin and Brookville were on the bubble. I think we have a solid group back. We are losing 18 seniors, so we have some roles to fill. But the kids are working hard, and they know the tasks at hand and what is expected of them.”
