Bob Hale passed this morning, please send your thoughts and prayers to his wife Anna Hale. Bob was one of the most honorable men I knew and he will be missed. |

My thoughts are with the Hale Family at this time.
Bob Hale (Poppy) was a great guy. He was friends with my dad Kenneth Young also a Korean War Veteran and a member of the VFW Post 3809 and the American Legion. When dad died in 2006 Bob was there for my family and had very nice words to say about my dad at his funeral service. I worked with Bob on the Veterans Memorial in Middletown Ohio for nearly five years and drove him a few times in the Memorial Day Parade. I will miss him as will everyone that knew him.

I heard that too but the funeral isn't until Wednesday. I got teary none the less.
Thanks for the info on the medals John. I have several from my grandpa from WWII. His CIB is my favorite even though the blue is starting to wear off. |

He earned the Army Occupation Medal Germany, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Defense Medal and two Battle Stars.
 The Army of Occupation Medal is a military decoration of the United States military which was established by the United States War Department in 1946. The medal was created in the aftermath of the Second World War to recognize those who had performed occupation service in either Germany or Japan.
 The National Defense Service Medal is a military service medal of the United States military originally commissioned by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Created in 1953, the National Defense Service Medal was intended to be a blanket campaign medal awarded to any member of the United States military who served honorably during a designated time period of which a national emergency had been declared.
Good Conduct Medal -The Good Conduct Medal is one of the oldest military decorations of the United States military.
The Good Conduct Medal is awarded to any enlisted member of the United States military who completes three consecutive years of "honorable and faithful service". Such service implies that a standard enlistment was completed without any non-judicial punishments, disciplinary infractions, or court martial offenses. If a service member commits an offense, the three-year mark "resets" and a service member must perform an additional three years of service without having to be disciplined, before the Good Conduct may be authorized.
 Combat Infantry Badge -The Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB) is the U.S. Army combat service recognition decoration awarded to soldiers enlisted men and officers (commissioned and warrant) holding colonel rank or below, who personally fought in active ground combat while an assigned member of either an infantry or a Special Forces unit, of brigade size or smaller, any time after 6 December 1941. The CIB and its non-combat analogue, the infantry skill-recognition Expert Infantryman Badge (EIB) were simultaneously created during World War II as primary recognition of the combat service and sacrifices of the infantrymen who likely would be wounded or killed in numbers disproportionate to those of soldiers from the Armys other service branches.
Korean Defense Medal -The Korea Defense Service Medal is a United States military award that was first created in 2002 when it was signed into law by President George W. Bush. The bill to create the proposal was introduced and championed by Rep. Elton Gallegly and Sen. Ben "Night Horse" Campbell. In 2004, the Institute of Heraldry approved the final design and the medal became authorized for distribution.
 The Korea Defense Service Medal (KDSM) is authorized for those members of the U.S. military who have served duty in the Republic of Korea to uphold the armistice between South and North Korea. To qualify for the KDSM, a service member must have served at least thirty consecutive days in the Korean theater. The medal is also granted for 60 non-consecutive days of service which includes reservists on annual training in Korea.

HALE, Robert H. Age 76, of Monroe, died Thursday morning at his residence surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with Pancreatic cancer. He was born February 11, 1933 in Middletown, Ohio to Alton and Inez (Henry) Hale. He retired from AK Steel with over 37 years of service. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He earned the Army Occupation Medal Germany, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Defense Medal and two Battle Stars. He was also very proud of his service to the City of Monroe as a part time Police Officer from the mid to late 1960's. He was a member of the DAV, American Legion Post 218 and VFW Post 3809, where he served as their Commander for 5 terms and also as their Chaplain. From 2000-2001 he also served as the District 4 Commander for the Veterans of Foreign War. He was an outspoken advocate for Veterans affairs and served on committees for both the Middletown and Monroe Veterans Memorials. He was an elder and property manager at the Monroe Presbyterian Church and was an active community leader in Monroe. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Holly Geisler; grandson, Joshua Hale; and sisters, Thelma Watson, Linda Lyons and Frankie Krause. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Anna L. (Sroufe); sons, Kelley (Barbara) Hale, Matthew (Renee) Hale; daughter, Autumn (Brian) Adams; grandchildren Jeffery Hale, Heather Hale, Megan Geisler, James R. Geisler; great granddaughter Rilynn; sister, Joyce (Roy) Day; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services are Wednesday, September 2, 2009, 11:00 AM at the Monroe Presbyterian Church, 57 W. Elm Street, Monroe, Ohio, Pastor Patrick Warren officiating. Interment will be at Mound Cemetery, Monroe, Ohio, with military services by the Combined Honor Guard. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-8 pm at Breitenbach-McCoy-Leffler Funeral Home in Middletown, Ohio. In the short time I have know Bob I found him to the last of a dying breed.
You always knew where you stood with him, no BS just the truth, even if it was harsh.
He will be missed, this town has lost a "Great man and a true citizen".
God rest Bob's soul and God Bless Anna and her family. |

We visited Anna last night and it was comforting to know that he passed very peacefully surrounded by his loving wife and amazing kids. God rest his soul..

Bob Hale has been a close family friend. I feel fortunate to have that experience. My grandfather and Bob were best friends. When my grandfather passed, my father was just out of high school. Bob and Anna were so supportive and kind to my grandmother and the boys. Growing up I use to love listening to Bob tell stories of my grandfather and my own dad. Bob has a spirit about him that I have yet to encounter with anyone else. Towns like Monroe are built around men like him! God Bless you Bob! Our prayers are with you Anna and the Hale family! |

I met Bob 3 years ago, and all I can is he was a wonderful man. He will surely be missed! My prayers are with the entire Hale family. |

Bob epitomized the term "True American". This is a huge loss to Monroe and he will be sorely missed. 
While I'd only had a few conversations with him (about cars, of course!), he cracked me up with his wit and I appreciated his brutal honesty.

There is a lot to be said for wisdom and the content of one's character. Bob had that in spades.
Some of the best advice I've ever gotten came straight from Grumpy - his wisdom and kindness are some of the things that you don't see very often anymore.
Monroe and the surrounding area has lost a giant of a man and one of the biggest of kids.
Thank you, Bob, for everything you've done. |

I really didn't know Bob Hale until I worked with him on the Veterans Memorial project (almost 3 years). He was very dedicated to his country and to the City of Monroe. He wanted so badly for that Memorial to be built to recognize our veterans and to be a special place in Monroe. The committee worked hard to finish the Memorial (when they learned of Bob's illness) and it was very important to make Bob a major part of the dedication.
I will miss Bob Hale. He was a stand up guy who loved his family.
My family prayers and condolences go out to Anna and the entire Hale family.
