Posted - 03/03/2010 : 10:50:06 AM Jessica Heffner, Staff Writer for the Middletown Journal is reporting that there is a hearing today regarding "proposed modifications to AK Steel’s permit to operate underground injection wells".
The draft permit that would be re-issued by the Ohio EPA includes some of the following changes agreed upon by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, which represented the EPA in the appeal, and AK Steel: • Waste analysis monitoring requirements have been added; • Monitoring for corrosion and waste analysis are due within 15 days following the quarter in which the sampling is conducted; • Daily monitoring of specific gravity is required instead of continuous; • Annulus sight levels must be recorded daily and reported monthly; • The contingency monitoring plan will be removed from permits based on the permit modification request filed on June 1, 2009.
Written comments will be accepted on the permit changes until March 12. Comments may be submitted to the Ohio EPA Division of Drinking and Ground Waters, Attn: UIC Unit Supervisor, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, OH 43216-1049.

Being an insider and knowing something is much better than being an outsider and knowing nothing.

Yet the system, as it is set up, does little to protect the community around that plant. The system is a joke. Being in compliance for one day means nothing.
I have zero faith in the EPA at this point. ZERO, so why would I attend their meeting?

i thought the EPA was supposed to protect the people?

Are you saying its ok for AK to pollute the ground, just not the air?

A copy of the draft permit can be viewed at the Middletown Public Library. Written comments will be accepted on the permit changes until March 12.
You do realize that this was a hearing on polluting the ground not the air! Besides, they have only injected about 580 million gallons of pickling liquor into the ground since 69.
