I've posted a few of these before, but I have a special place in my heart for the Military and on days like this I consider it a small tribute to post a few of these..

The US Embassy in Beruit after the terrorist bombing in 1983 that killed 241 service men.

At around 6:20 a.m., a yellow Mercedes-Benz truck drove to Beirut International Airport, where the 1st Battalion 8th Marines under the 2nd Marine Division had set up its local headquarters. The truck had been substituted for a hijacked water delivery truck. The truck turned onto an access road leading to the Marines' compound and circled a parking lot. The driver then accelerated and crashed through a barbed wire fence around the parking lot, passed between two sentry posts, crashed through a gate and drove into the lobby of the Marine headquarters. The Marine sentries at the gate were operating under rules of engagement which made it very difficult to respond quickly to the truck. By the time the two sentries had locked, loaded, and shouldered their weapons, the truck was already inside the building's entry way.

The suicide bomber detonated his explosives, which were equivalent to 5,400 kg (12,000 pounds) of TNT. The force of the explosion collapsed the four-story cinder-block building into rubble, crushing many inside. According to Eric Hammel in his history of the Marine landing force,

The force of the explosion initially lifted the entire four-story structure, shearing the bases of the concrete support columns, each measuring fifteen feet in circumference and reinforced by numerous one-and-three-quarter-inch steel rods. The airborne building then fell in upon itself. A massive shock wave and ball of flaming gas was hurled in all directions.

The explosive mechanism was a gas-enhanced device, probably consisting of bottled propane, butane, or acetylene, placed in proximity to a conventional explosive such as primacord, all of which are readily available on the retail market. Despite the lack of sophistication and ubiquity of its component parts, a gas-enhanced device can be a very lethal weapon. These devices are similar to fuel-air or thermobaric weapons, explaining the large blast and damage.

Nothing goes quite hand in hand with service men abroad like Bob Hope. These were from the Beruit swing in the early months of 1984.

I visited Antietam battlefield many years ago (too much trouble to dig out the pictures) but it was... I can't even find the words. It took my breath away. You could feel the death and smell the smoke and yet it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop on the grassy field.

Fantastic prints Vince.

Thanks for the kind words. This last one is from Arlington and is the grave of the most decorated veteran of WWII, Audie Murphy. If one ever gets the chance to go to Arlington, it is worth every penny to get a guided tour. I've been there a few times and two years ago when I shot all of these was the first time I took such a tour and I have to tell you, that the older gentleman who was a veteran him self brought me to tears with his passion as he detailed every section of the cemetary.

Has anyone ever met Reed Banks in Monroe? He is a Bronze Star holder from WWII. Wonderful gentleman to speak with.
