Council was split on the vote for vice mayor.

The establishment men nominated, seconded and then voted for, without the support of any council women.

Clearly the men got together and made a plan. Looks like the women did too. It took Todd Hickman, the new guy, to break the tie for Anna Hale.

An interesting development. Perhaps a new direction. I like it.

How you can take that scenario and spin it in that direction would have to include tea leaves or Oz type technology. Though it be entertaining, council has changed zilch in the big scheme of things!!!! :-)

Are you saying Anna was the wrong choice?
Why do you feel that way, was there a better choice for the city?

John may be wrong on the direction of Council, but the choice of Anna Hale was excellent.
Anna brings no grudges, politics or lobby (local contractor -real estate)interests to the table.

It might mean something if the VM job came with significant responsibilities. We have a city manager - council form of government. The City Manager runs the city at council's direction, the Mayor runs the council, and the VM fills in during meetings when the Mayor is out. That puts the VP role pretty low in critically, unless they automatically tie it to certain council committee's leadership or such. My guess is it was just the direction of the wind, and little more.

What exactly am I wrong about on the direction of council? I think they will be more measured in their treatment of others. More in touch with their feminine side so to speak.

i think this council will have the same direction as those in the past. take care of citizens and try to make the right choices. what i like about this bunch is they can agree or disagree and still respect each other at the end of the day.

I just stated you "may be" wrong in suggesting perhaps a new direction. Thos is just the forst vote with the newest member of Council. Nothing personal or combative.
I like the make-up of Council. I also like the fact that there appears to be a new power base. It should be interesting the next couple of years.

I respectfully disagree with you on the direction. Its not the same direction. If it were going in the same direction, Bob Kelley would be our vice mayor. That in itself is a whole new direction. Instead, council has, as Bob Bretland put it, a new power base.

Sure it may only be 1 vote for VM, but 1 vote means a whole new direction and a whole new message. A message that says you can't bully you way to get what you want.

In 2008, the city agreed not to partner with the chamber in part by the comments made by Bob Kelley. “I don’t think the city is served well at all by being part of the chamber. In the five or six years I’ve been a part of council, there’s been little if any cooperation between the city and the chamber,” he said.

In 2010, Council reversed its its decision regarding Chamber membership despite Kelley's protestations. Kelley no longer carries the political influence he had on all of council last year.

Diplomacy will rule the new year. Diplomacy started when you re-instated the Chamber of Commerce. To me, that is the new direction I see.

I'm all for council being respectful to each other, I just hope that respect extends to every citizen in Monroe too. This is not an indictment of the past rather it is a plea for the future direction of council one of diplomacy and respect to all people, companies and entities.
