Emergency Resolution No. 50-2010. A Resolution authorizing and directing the City Manager to enter into an agreement by and between the City of Monroe, the Board of Commissioners of Butler County, Ohio, and SinglePoint Design-Build LLC for the rehabilitation of property to be used as a community center and available space for a library, and declaring an emergency.

Will it still be a lending library dependent on volunteers or is there a plan to be a complete library with regular hours and paid staffing?? Will they get any support from the Middletown Library now that the library levy passed??

I seriously doubt that they'll get the financial support. I believe that would take money away from Middletown (Trenton and West Chester)

It's the same deal as it always was, a home for the lending library.

LOL - you just described our current library!

The dialysis center is bigger than it looks. Both the library and community center will be about 3x bigger, have more parking with lights at night and we'll be downtown, right off 63. Only Kroger sees more traffic than Ameristop!

Under the current plan, the building will be renovated before the city of monroe gets the property. At the Tuesday evening council meeting we will vote on this issue and more details will be presented.

LOL! I understand our current place is small but it seems like a waste of funds if we are not improving. JMO!
And Really? The area, traffic flow, really want your kids waiting in the parking lot outside when the gas station (even though it is a nice one) is not that far away? Travelers not from the community are there, the people from the Terrace sit outside there at all hours... C'mon - you know what I am saying!

It will be a major improvement. Our current library is dank and smelly from an aging AC system which is not good for the 7000+ books and we don't even have restrooms. The older patrons have to walk a good distance and at night the parking lot is very dark.

I hope there is a plan to install some privacy fence across the back of the new facility as residents of the apartments have been using it for a short cut and extra parking. Also, it is being frequented by traveling semi drivers as a sleeping lot. The greenery between the 2 drives really should go too, to increase visibility in the lot. There are several easy fixes but I keep impressing upon everyone there will be different security issues to deal with.

Well good to know someone is thinking about some of the concerns.
Just a real shame it could not be put on the Old HS property or the land from one of the vacant strip malls could not be donated or sold...
just thinkin out loud...

They completely restructured the original plan and I got a little tear in my eye seeing the new drawings. We'll have a wonderful new library space and this entire building will be such an asset to Monroe.

I run the risk of being hit with a tube sock with a bar of soap in it...but this town really needs a library. And I am willing to lend some free time to this venture. I know I had previously contacted the lending library and never followed through. But this time I really mean it. I am crazy addicted, reading, book collecting fool.

Thanks city staff and council. This will help.

In recent times, has anyone researched the Middletown Library (we are in that library district) doing drop offs and pick ups at the Monroe Lending Library, like they do Mount Pleasant and at least some others in the past. Like at Mt Pleasant, all that wold be required is a desk, and computer, and a staff willing to manage it, which I think we have in place, although like Hound Dog I am not as close to it as I should be. They drive right by here on their way to the WestChester one they run there.

While i am sure their levy passage will not permit construction of a Monroe Library, perhaps it is time to revisit the pick up and drop off concept.

Houndog - We would love to have you involved. You just missed a volunteers meeting earlier this week, but stop into the library and take out a membership. There are also some things coming up this summer and fall that you might like to become involved in. Here are a couple, but keep checking the website for updates: www.monroelibrary.net

Aug. 23 - Book Review - The Art of Racing in the Rain" by Garth Stein

Sept. 3 - Quarter Auction at Mt. Pleasant

Why would your kids be waiting in the parking lot? Are you planning on dropping them off and letting them fend for themselves? If they're old enough to be there alone and they're waiting for you to pick them up, then they should wait for you inside. Something can happen to your kids anywhere. Just sayin.

Because kids are kids and if you drop them off to use the library - that does not mean they will not venture. The IGA Express will be an attractive nuisance to young people. I see no need to attend the library with a 13-14-15 yr old using the library or one of its services. And I still believe it is a poor location for the reasons I have stated. JMO!

Rez, we appreciate your concerns and I will be happy to present your thoughts and ideas to the Library Board for discussion. I have spoken to both Mr. Brock & Mr Chesar about other security issues such as fencing, vegetation overgrowth, semi parking, etc.

We hope the community at large will get involved and be a part of this new venture - so get that knee good and strong and power up that Sawzall to help us clear away the weeds!

Even with a bad knee! I would brace it up well enough to help weed whack a day or 2 (no crouching duties or knee bends though-lol) - just say when!
Just because I am concerned over the location does not mean I will not lend a hand!
