Alec's Partner Officer Greg Meyer and other officers will be attending a service for Alec in Lebanon on Wed at 12 noon. Chief Homer explained there is a special section for Service Dogs.

Please keep Officer Meyer in your thoughts and prayers

Monroe has gone from two great dogs to 0, they were a critical part of our police department. It won't be cheep to replace them. Anyone have any ideas for a fund raiser?

Yes, both dogs were a great asset to our department. Losing both at the same time has had a major impact on us. You just cant say enough good things about Tango and Alec and both of their handlers. I personally worked side by side with Tango and his handler for pretty much all of Tango's career. He was a go-getter and never gave up. He was more of a human than a dog, he liked coffee as much as the rest of us... Sports Dad can confirm that! He loved his work and loved to go to work everyday. On his off days if he would hear a siren or see one of the cruisers stop by, he was ready to go, he just had to be there! He was not only a police officer, trained to do things some humans would never do, he was a friend to all of us, he will truly be missed.

I worked with Alec and his handler for little over a year. Recently, his handler would bring him in the station so he could have some "fun" time. He loved to chew up plastic bottles and play keep away. Alec too was a go-getter and never gave up. He loved to work and when it was time for the sirens to come on, he knew he would be right in the middle of what ever it was and he would get excited. I think that is what kept both dogs going. We all hoped that Alec would retire like Tango so he could spend some time "off duty" and finish out his life as a friend, but unfortunately things don't always go our way. Alec finished his shift on the 11th and shortly after getting home he suffered from a seizure and a stroke. He was rushed to the Animal Hospital and passed away the next day around 3:00pm. Alec will be missed by all. A service for him will be held at Pines Pet Cemetery & Cremation Center located at 764 Riley Wills Rd Lebanon, OH 45036 at 12:00pm. A procession will line up at the Warren County FOP Lodge on S.R. 122 at 11:30. Anyone wanting to make donations to the K-9 fund can send a check or money order written to Monroe Police K-9 Fund, to Monroe Police Dept. 233 South Main Street, Monroe Ohio 45050 Attention: K-9 Fund. A portion of the money will be used for the burial of Alec and the cost for training of a new K-9.

I would suggest contacting the Red Onion to see if he can help. He does a lot for paws fundraisers. Possibly contact Paws as well to see if they can help in any way. We need another Dog.

Catnip & Carrots will be sending a check for $100 in honor of Alec. We'd be happy to help organize a fundraiser for a new K-9 partner.

Police bid farewell to K-9 officer
VIDEO: Watch footage from the funeral
Click-2-Listen
By Meagan Pattison

For The Journal

Thursday, December 20, 2007

LEBANON Alec received a police officer's farewell.

The 9-year-old German Shepherd and K-9 dog for the Monroe Police Department was euthanized Tuesday night after suffering a stroke. He was buried Wednesday afternoon at the Pines Pet Cemetery in front of officers representing departments from Hamilton, Fairfield, West Chester Twp. and Wilmington.

Officers lined up outside the small white chapel to honor the dog, who had helped many of the area departments.

Alec was more than a police dog, said his owner, Monroe Officer Gregg Myers. He was a family member, a pet, and a friend, Myers said.

"We as K-9 handlers know they're police officers just like we are," he said, explaining the purpose for such a large service.

Myers called Alec, who had been his partner for 7 1/2 years, "a ham." Myers said Alec was "probably the best dual purpose dog I ever had."

Every year, Myers and Alec attended the Butler County's Chiefs Association's Respect for Law Camp. The camp is designed for kids to learn about law enforcement.

They did a simulation of a crime every year at the camp in which the criminal runs from the police. The grand finale of this show included Alec taking down the criminal.

"He had fun with it," Myers said.

Myers said Alec left for work with him every morning and came home with him every night. He said Alec was "extremely social, but he was 400 miles an hour when it came to work."

The Monroe Police Department is without a dog, but is in the process of purchasing a new German Shepherd for the department. Myers said Alec will be greatly missed and said he set the bar for the other dogs and it will be hard to replace him.

I remember when Alec first came aboard. I used to see them almost every morning at the community park. As long as partner was around he was as nice and playful as any pet. I think he came from Europe but I'm not sure. I know police dogs come from specific breeders and can only be taught to smell for drugs or bombs but not both.

Best wishes to the Police Dept. and Officer Myers.

Does anyone have any photos of Alec we can post on this thread? This can be a kind of memorial to our fallen officer.

I think my favorite is Officer Meyers with Alec. Alec performed with grace that day, and the community got to see a glimpse of what our K-9 Officers are capable of.

SO what is the Average cost for a police dog? I know they are generally imported and this is a big factor as well.

I haven't been on in a long while but I personally will miss Alec. My husband and I attended Monroe Citizens Police Academy this past spring and one of the classes was about the roll of the police dog. Alec was a sight to see when he "apprehended" a bad guy (one of Monroe Auxillaries). He would finish his job and all he wanted was praised and his "toy". When he was with Officer Meyers he was a very approachable loveable dog just like our own, but when he was "on duty" he was a sight to behold.
Alec we will miss you buddy, we know you are at peace in doggy heaven.
