I hope that everyone has seen the progress being made on the Veterans Memorial.

The "eagle has landed" on the Memorial!! This eagle was purchased by the City a number of years ago to go on a planned Veterans Memorial. Those plans fell through and the eagle has been waiting in storage for this new Memorial.

Six flag poles have been installed. These poles will fly the flags of the 6 branches of service that are being recognized. They are the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and the Merchant Marines.
There are also concrete columns in front of each flag pole that will have a plaque representing each service branch.

The memorial bricks have been set in the site. Some of the bricks are engraved. The remaining bricks to be engraved will be done "in place".

The primary flag pole (that will be higher than the service poles) will be installed on the opposite side of the Memorial from the service flag poles. It will carry the U.S. flag. I do not know if other flags will be displayed on the primary flag pole.

Dedication of the Memorial is planned for the weekend prior to Memorial Day. Keep an eye on the Pulse Journal and the Monroe Messenger for details as the date approaches.

Bob K,

Thanks so much.

It has been a very rewarding experience being on the Veterans Memorial committee. I have been able to sit and listen to Vietnam, Korea and WW II veterans talk about the importance of remembering their fallen and surviving comrades. Some of the stories I've heard have truly been amazing.

On a lighter note, you'd be surprised how the service rivalries continue long after these folks have served their country. The banter back and forth between these veterans has been (as the commercial says) priceless.

The memorial is looking terrific, and I too commend you on you and the committee's efforts. This is a valuable, and meaningful addition to Monroe's "front porch". Thank you for your hard work.

The primary flag pole has been set!!!!!!
It won't be long before the flags are flying.

We need warm weather to get here. Then the finishing touches start.
There will be sidewalks to the Memorial from the parking areas and there will be landscaping done
as soon as possible. There will be benches on the Memorial so folks can sit for a while.
There will be a piece of marble (just below the eagle) that will have an inspiring inscription.
There will be led accent lighting so the Memorial is well displayed at night.

There's also some work (blasting, touch-up) on the concrete that needs to be completed.
The STAR in the middle needs to be painted.

We're getting there.....................

There was a mini dedication at the Memorial today.

The six service flags and the American flag are now flying!!!
The service plaques are in place on the concrete pillars in front of the flagpoles.
A few of the engraved bricks are in place.

There's a plywood sidewalk in place from the Chase parking lot to the Memorial.
Go check it out.

It would be nice if they have a formal dedication. Possibly on baseball opening day? This would be a great event for all the kids to be involved in. Hopefully one is already planned. It looks great.

where is no money on this one, the city is doing something OK,. some folks need to look at the entire picture and realize this is a great city and we are going places, any negative posts on this web may be instrumental in turning things the other way. If there is problem come to a city council meeting.

I was asked earlier this week if the Cub Scouts and/or Boy Scouts were going to involved in the dedication of the memorial. I know that we aren't currently, but we'd be happy to if that's possible.

Feel free to contact me if you'd like to discuss.

I talked to the person in charge of the dedication ceremonies. The agenda is pretty much set but there is a task that the scouts can help with.
I will contact you.

The agenda for the dedication ceremony has been worked on for over two months. It has taken a lot of time to line up the proposed speakers, bands, etc..
There's no problem with the Scouts helping. They just had not been asked. An oversight by the committee.
But there is an agenda. We (the committee) just reviewed it this past Thursday night.

an update:

the brick sidewalk from the Chase Bank parking lot to the Memorial is completed. No more walking in the mud.

the landscaping is mostly completed. Thanks to Berns Nursery and the City.

more personalized bricks have been completed. Not all are complete so don't be disappointed if yours is not done yet. However, if your brick continues to be missing then let me know. I will follow up on it for you.

led lights and spot lights are in place on the sidewalk and the Memorial so it can be visited after dark. All may not be working correctly at this time but they will be soon.

the formal dedication will be Memorial Day weekend. The site will be used for the annual City Memorial Day Services on 5/25. Information on these events will be published in the Monroe Messenger, Monroe Observer and the Pulse Journal.

Is it still too late to get a brick put in before the dedication? We've been meaning to add one in honor of all service dogs.

Buckeyenut,

It's getting close on the cutoff for the dedication. Less than 2 weeks!!!

I would say to hand deliver your form to the MACF and hope it gets in the queue. As with most things like this, last minute entries are now arriving. We hope to get all bricks enscribed by the 22nd, but it's first come - first served.

I met with WWII Vet Staff Sergeant Ed MacDonald today.

He urges everyone to buy a brick, even after the dedication on May 22.

Honor our Monroe Vets, buy a brick.

Monroe will honor the city's veterans with a memorial park and monument located on the southeast corner of the intersection of RT 63 and Main Street, Monroe. You can help by purchasing an engraved paver to honor a veteran or all the veterans.

Engrave with veterans name, a family member, a business or an organization.

Three Lines of Text with 15 Characters.

4" x 8" Paver

Call Ed MacDonald at 539-8826 for more information.

Or complete the PDF below:

Ed wanted me to tell everyon that there is no deadline to order the paver.

Ed MacDonald is indeed a great man!!!

Pavers can be ordered anytime. We expect that orders will increase after folks see the Memorial for the first time. The order forms are being handled by the Monroe Area Community Foundation so orders can be accepted well into the future. We will also have paver order forms at the dedication on the 22nd.

The dedication program has been finalized and goes to the printer today. We will be distributing them throughout the community later in the week.

This year the City of Monroe will hold it's Memorial Day services at the Veterans Memorial on Monday, 5/25 at 2PM. We were told last night that State Senator Gary Cates will be in attendance on Memorial Day since he can't attend the dedication ceremony. Of course, that is always subject to change.

Thanks to all for your support of the Monroe Veterans Memorial.

Very nice dedication, thanks to everyone whose hard work made the memorial a success. Thanks for letting the scouts be a part of the ceremony; I know that several of their parents were happy to have them there. And, thank you to all to whom this memorial is dedicated.

Other than some that we took of the scouts distributing programs, I'm afraid that we didn't take any. There were plenty of cameras going, though, so someone has 'em!

The Memorial and the Dedication Ceremony were absolutely more than I expected.

The turnout was incredible and the speakers were inspiring. A big thanks to everyone that has worked so diligently to make this happen here in Monroe.

I saw John Beagle and Bryan Garde (I hope I spelled this right) with their cameras in hand so I'm sure there will be lots of great pictures.
