MONROE — A legendary football coach, stellar baseball coach, four-sport athlete and a bear of an Olympian were honored Tuesday evening, Dec. 22, prior to Monroe’s boys basketball game at Monroe High School.

Late football coach Eugene “Gene” Rice, who led the Hornets to consecutive undefeated seasons in 1969 and ’70; baseball legend Joe Urso, who developed a baseball program that put Monroe on the Ohio map; 1970s football and Olympic wrestling standout Jeff Epperson, who once wrestled a brown bear in an exhibition match when Middletown’s Towne Mall first opened; and 1950s four-sport athlete Don “Chick” Garver, one of the fastest student athletes to don Monroe’s gold and blue, are the latest group of athletic standouts to be inducted into the Monroe High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Congratulations all.

If my memory serves me correct, it wasn't just that Jeff won but he was the first "human" to win in literally hundreds of times!!!! I didn't live in Monroe then and new nothing of Epperson, but he instantly became legend when he beat the bear!!!! He became very famous in these parts.:)

Let no man pull you low enough to hate him.

I know which one is Urso (red sweater), but not sure of who is who on the other guys.

Epperson is the big guy. I'll never forget the first time I saw him in high school. Talk about intimidating. He was the biggest kid I'd ever seen.

Garver is in the sweater vest. One of the photos above shows him and his daughters.

Per Journal:
David Hughes, who served as a co-captain on the 1970 Mid-Miami League champion team and played for coach Rice, accepted on behalf of the late coach.
