Monroe Firefighters Rally Around Stricken Comrade

POSTED: 6:51 pm EDT July 21, 2008
UPDATED: 8:26 am EDT July 22, 2008

MONROE, Ohio -- Its been a little quiet recently at Monroes fires station.

Kenny Ellis, one of the departments firefighters, was diagnosed with stage-four brain cancer, and his comrades have pulled together despite their glum mood to help their brother while he needs it most.

It's a little somber without him, said Capt. Richard Mascarella. There's definitely a void.

Ellis is unable to work, which would normally leave him without an income, but his comrades have volunteered to pick up all of his shifts so he can still collect a paycheck.

When you're working, he works to save your life, you save his life, protect each other and that extends on even after work, Mascarella said.

Joel Coomer worked his 48th hour Monday at the firehouse, but he wasnt complaining.

He would be the first one to help you if you needed it, and that's why we're all stepping up to help him out, said David Hayes, a firefighter and paramedic.

The firefighters have also been helping Ellis around the house, and nearby departments in Middletown and Liberty Township have pitched in to help their former comrade.

If youd like to help, donations may be made the Kenny Ellis Cancer Fund at any Fifth Third bank.

It is so great that these guys are covering Kenny's shifts. Every third day, one of these guys works an extra 24 hour shift just so Kenny can get his regular paycheck.

That is what it is all about! These guys truly are all HEROS!!!

They had a vendor stand set up at our Light Up the Sky festival this year to raise money. It was great to see how much they care about each other and how much they're willing to do for a fellow firefighter. I hope they did well.

I have a soft heart for firefighters. My Dad was a Cincinnati fireman for 28 years. They are the real heroes. My prayers to him and his family. His fellow firefighters show true loyalty to a comrade. Bless them.

How about they have a boot drive? I know we gave to the one at the end of the 4th festival. They could set up on a Friday evening or Saturday morning near Ameristop, the bank at Main & Elm, Maccready & Heritage Green and of course in front of the park entrance.

Something about that boot gets to me and this is such a great cause.

I believe it's when a fireman's boot is passed around and cold hard cashed is collected.

My dad used to say, 'You wouldn't worry so much about what people thought about you if you knew how seldom they did.

A lot of fire departments had them after 9/11. The Monroe firemen stood with their "boots" down on Rt. 63 near the traffic lights and would collect money to be sent to the NYFD.

I think a boot drive is a good idea. Will donate cold cash to any boot I see.
