This is the first in a series of posts about the wonderful scholarships available to Monroe Students. Last year $1.8 million was awarded but that doesn't beat the record $2.2 million collected by Monroe students in 2008.

KFC Colonel's Scholars Program
Website: http://www.kfcscholars.org/

The KFC Colonel's Scholars Program® is looking for high school seniors with entrepreneurial drive, strong perseverance, demonstrated financial need, and who want to pursue a college education at an accredited public institution in the state they reside.

Awards can be up to $5,000 per year. The scholar could receive up to $20,000 over four years to help complete a bachelor's degree. Scholars may begin their college career by entering into either a 2-or 4-year accredited in-state college/university, as long as they stay on track to complete a bachelor's degree program.

To qualify, a student must be graduating from high school between 12/1/09 and 8/31/10, maintain a minimum high school cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher, enrolling in a public, in-state college or university (start date no later than 9/30/10), pursuing a bachelor's degree, and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Students are to complete their application on at www.kfcscholars.org .

The online application will be available from December 1, 2009 through February 10, 2010. http://www.act.org/kfcscholars/index.html

Beagle: One thing I have noticed over the past years is that Monroe generates many scholarships yet generates very few applicants. Often the same person gets a large number of scholarships while many deserving students get nothing. Why do you suppose this is happening? too lazy or uninformed about all the scholarship opportunities that are out there? Can you comment on any effort to distribute scholarships to a broader group of students?

Lolli: The counselors are working very hard and have been since early fall, to have students apply for scholarships. In the past there have been scholarships offered with no applicants. The counselors are working to correct that. We are hopeful that we have more than a handful of applicants this year for all scholarships.
