Consideration of Motion authorizing the expenditure of $17,192 for the purchase of a Ford Escape for the Department of Public Works.

Council did not approve the expenditure of $17,192 for the purchase of a Ford Escape for the Department of Public Works.

Reason cited: We don't have a department of public works head. We should wait until we have a replacement for Bradley Collins because the new person may prefer a different vehicle.

Kudos to Council for NOT SPENDING.

I'm SURE I don't need to remind you of this but the new guy would be required to fill out the appropriate paperwork as well as grow a b!tchin' mullet.

Wait a second! The City provides the car, but the person (who doesn't even exist yet) gets to choose the type of car? Apparently Brad, who was in the position for quite a while, felt that a Ford Escape was appropriate.

Buy the dang car and make the new guy/gal use it!!!! He can order the next car in a couple of years when he understand the department a little better.

Is it a requirement that the different car also cost $17,192 or can it be more? How much more? Will the new director have to justify the higher priced vehicle? I know it could be less - but fat chance that will happen.

Am I wrong here? I don't mean to rant but these kinds of things make me (as a taxpayer) crazy.

Yeah - unless the new guy chooses a Ford Focus (i.e., cheap) then I don't know this is necessarily a good thing.

Who are you buying the car for guys, we have no employee in the position and may not have for a while and to point many management employees would rather have a car allowance as opposed to a company car that they have to account for 24/7. Why tie your hands now with a candidate that might just as soon have a car allowance. We saved the expense for a car we dont need, insurance for a car we dont need and may not need when the replacement is hired. If it's any consolation, Mr. Hickman agreed with you and wanted to buy the car.

Me too... Why buy something in anticipation that it may be needed - especially when we're talking over $17,000?

Just curious - does anyone know how other council members voted on this issue?
