CHRISTMAS ON THE PLAZA

Got your attention yet?! The Optimist Club of the Monroe Area is planning this community event, and would like to invite you and your organization to participate. We feel there is a need for a community involvement affair, and Christmas would be a great time to bring us all together!

We have scheduled a committee meeting for Wednesday, August 8th at 7:00PM at the James Monroe Community Room. The purpose of said meeting is to establish a planning committee for this event. Christmas on the Plaza would be a great way to join all organizations, churches, groups, etc. in a community wide effort to celebrate the holidays, and camaraderie of all peoples in Monroe. A tentative date for the event is Saturday, December 8, 2007.

Some ideas for Christmas on the Plaza celebration include tree lighting, choir performances, food and craft booths, carriage rides, and much more! Perhaps your group has a specialty or an idea to help contribute to make this a memorable occasion.

We need YOU to make this a successful endeavor! Please plan to have a representative from your group attend this initial meeting to get in on the groundbreaking committee formation. We are Optimistic that this will grow to be a huge, annual event!

So, get your ideas and your enthusiasm ready, and plan to join us! A phone call from one of our club members will follow to get a head count for the meeting. Christmas is coming fast, so lets get together soon! Thanks in advance for your participation!

Yours in Optimism,

Darrel Basford, Club President
(513) 600-3528
Sally Schmidt, Club Secretary (513) 791-1833

I think this is great. Just what Monroe needs. Springboro has had Christmas in Springboro for years and it always falls on the Ohio State Michigan game it seems. But anyway, they always draw a crowd and bring the community together. Craft tables, food, choirs, it just goes on and on.

I am glad Monroe is doing this. Bringing it back! Kudos!

This is a great idea. Monroe used to have a Christmas in the park with the bonfire and reindeer. It was great for the kids.

Thanks to the Optimist Club for heading this up.

Clark... you may be onto something, what about the Kawanza (sp?) celebration? They may want to call it "Holidays on the plaza" as not to descriminate from those who do not celebrate in the same manner.

I will be petitioning the city to allow for our annual Festivus display to be put up on the plaza.

Along with the time-honored display of the
"Feats of Strength" and "Airing of Grievances"
(which should take quite a while!)

"Kwanzaa on the Kurb" will be celebrated for 20 minutes on the street curb by Monroe Auto Repair-those celebrating longer may be charged with loitering.
"Ramadan on the Ramp" will take place on the ramp to I75 North (closest we could get to Mecca's direction). Please stay to the right as Allah knows only infidels use the left lane.

We will be shutting down Cin/Day-Main from Elm to Lebanon and utilizing the small road beside the city building.

We are actually on topic... "Christmas on the Plaza" is leaving out a lot of groups by call it that. Would "Holidays on the plaza" be more politcally correct?

Thoughts?

or maybe "Let's stay on topic here please"

Well, for obvious reasons, I won't be physically able to attend but my two cents would be in line with what AFKAH86 said. Unfortunately, I think naming anything city related as after a religous holiday is just asking for litigation.

Time to put Christmas back in Christmas .. Those people that have a problem with can get a committee and have they own celebration. As for it being ran by the city, it is not a city run event it will be held in the city on the property as long as all the details can be worked out. This is just my thoughts and does not reflect on the committee working on this.

Yeah...I agree; but try to convince the ACLU of that!

Even though it's not being "ran" by the city, the permit for the use of city property is granted by the city; thereby making them liable for the content.
