A highlight of every Monroe Area Community Foundation annual meeting is the announcement of the winner of the Cornerstone Award. It is presented to "a person, persons or a group who/which has displayed an unselfish use of time or money for the betterment of the Monroe community." On April 25, 2012 the Cornerstone committee chairman, Ron Tubbs, bestowed this year's 13th Cornerstone Award to Mary Maurer.

Mr. Tubbs said he has served on the Cornerstone Award committee several times, but he has never seen one person accomplish so many things in a lifetime.  For example, Mary, who was nominated by Pat Beatty, has volunteered to help the clerk of Monroe Council, took Monroe police training to be more knowledgeable of this part of city government, helps the elderly with their taxes, is active in Monroe Current Events, does visiting at the hospital, is a member of the Middletown Finance Committee, has served Mt. Pleasant locally and at the state level, is a member of the Monroe City Finance Audit Committee, is a Friend of Middletown Library, is in the Monroe Historical Society, and serves the Monroe Area Community Foundation at many functions and in various capacities.

Mary was presented with a personal plaque naming her the recipient of this award. A nameplate with Ms. Maurer’s name inscribed on it will be permanently displayed in the James Monroe Community Room in the city building.
