By: Tim Kellis

Monroe picked the worst time to play one of their worst games of the year as the Waynesville Spartans handed the Hornets a 23-7 defeat on Senior night. Waynesville  got on the board first with 5:55 to play in the first quarter when Jr. quarterback Cory Young hit junior running back Seth Millar on a 57 yard scoring pass. Millar scored again with 10:53 to play in the first half when he sprinted right and outraced the hornet defenders for a 4 yard TD run. 3 minutes later a Young to Brady Deters 20 yard pass pushed the Spartan lead to 20-0 as the try for a 2 point conversion failed.  Monroe got some life less than 2 minutes later as Ben Leahy scored on a 1 yard run, Zach Eggert tacked on the extra point and the Hornets cut into the Spartan lead.  Waynesville scored the 1st half’s and games last points when senior Max Gabbard booted a 19 yard field goal as time expired in the 2nd quarter. Neither team could dent the scoreboard in the final half. Waynesville totaled 371 yards for the game and limited Monroe to 171.

Leading defenders for the Hornets were; Jason Osterman 7 solo tackles, Stuart Kehl 5 solo and 3 assisted, Brandon Hodges 5 solo and 1 assisted and Tim Booth 4 solo and 3 assisted. This marked the final home game for Monroe Seniors; Jason Osterman, Stuart Kehl, Robbie Childers, Tim Booth, Derek Jackson, Jordan Miller, Kevin Lantrip, Jeremy Campbell, and Jacob “IZZY’ Isbell.

Monroe  now stands at 4-5 (4-1) in the league. The Hornets will close out the 2008 campaign with a road game at Northridge.
