Monroe Soccer team Wins Labor Day Tounament
Monday, September 4, 2000 12:00:00 AM - Monroe Ohio
Sweating through probably the hottest weekend of the summer, the Monroe Striker Boys Hamilton Stands team coached by Steve Maines and Brian MacKenzie won three games and tied one to bring home first place trophies from a Labor Day weekend tournament at Smith Park in Middletown. Defense played a huge part in their victories as the boys were not scored against in four games. They outscored their opponents 11-0!! Scoring in the tournament was as follows: 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie and 1 point for a shut-out. Up to three goals per game were also added to each team‘s score. The team with the highest score after four games won the tournament. Going into the last game Monroe needed a win, a shut-out and at least three goals to take first place in the tournament. The score at half-time was just 1-0. A score early in the third period was called back due to an offsides penalty. The team never gave up, though, and two goals by Josh Maines and third by Tyler George gave the boys a victory and the first place trophy! Congratulations, Hamilton Stands!
