The Monroe SAY Soccer boys’ wings (ages 8 and 9) team sponsored by WE Macdonald Ins and coached by Mike Striebick and Bryan Garde are the new 2001 State Champs. Their overall record for the entire season is 19-1-1. The team won three tournaments in route to the championship title. They won the Middletown pre-season Labor Day tournament, then came second in their regular season league. They proceeded to win the Franchise tournament by beating another very strong Monroe team in a penalty shootout. This win put them up against the regions best teams and they managed to win another four games to clench the state final win yesterday in Hamilton. The team sponsored by Macdonald Insurance, is made up of Nick Braden, Zac Eckert, Jake Essig, Derek Garde, Cody Brombaugh, Jamey King, Justin Robbins, Andrew Shaffer, Nick Streibick, Zane Vogelsang and Evan Witten. The championship game was against a well coached West Chester team who played a very similar style of soccer to the Monroe team to take the ball down the side of the field and cross across the goal mouth allowing the front line to score. The West Chester team had 18 shots on our goal verse our 7. Derek Garde played an outstanding game as keeper ensuring another shutout victory for the team. Nick Braden scored the winning goal after an excellent cross by Zac Eckert. This is only the second State victory for the Monroe Soccer Association. Tom Gannon the current Monroe high school boys soccer Head Coach gave Monroe the first state win back in 1992 with a striker boy’s team.
