Planes hit Trade Center

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Two planes crashed into the World Trade Center shortly before the start of the New York workday Tuesday, according to witnesses.

Smoke pours from the World Trade Center in New York after the first of two plane crashes into the structure early Tuesday.

Smoke poured out of the northern Tower One of the twin-tower structure just before 9 a.m. As television showed pictures of the first fire, a second plane crashed into Tower Two, causing a huge explosion.

The tower was the site of a terrorist attack in 1993 that caused massive evacuation and several deaths.

"The plane was coming in low and ... it looked like it hit at a slight angle," said Sean Murtagh, a CNN vice president, referring to the first crash.

In Washington, officials said the FBI was investigating reports of a plane hijacking before the crashes, the Associated Press reported.

There was no immediate word on injuries or fatalities in the twin disasters, which happened shortly before 9 a.m. and then right around 9 a.m.

The New York Stock Exchange, located several blocks away in downtown Manhattan, will open as scheduled at 9:30 a.m., an exchange spokesman said.
