Shingitai Jujitsu / Grappling
Grappling is a combination of freestyle wrestling, judo and jiu-jitsu.  It consist of arm, wrist, finger, leg and foot locks as well as numerous sweeps, takedowns, throws and chokes.  This is especially good for women to learn because the techniques are designed to allow a smaller person to defeat a larger opponent.  Most attackers do not expect a woman to be able to fight from the ground.  A woman trained in grappling has the element of surprise on her side.   Grappling is also a very good aerobic exercise.

Kendo
Kendo is a Japanese martial art that means "Way of the Sword."  Participants practice sword fighting techniques wearing bogu (armor) and using a bamboo shinai (practice sword).  We also do two-man katas (forms) with the wooden bokken (sword) and iaido (drawing and cutting) with the iaito (practice metal sword).

Kendo dates back to ancient Japan and as developed as a way to safely practice the techniques of the Samurai sword.  Targets are the head, wrist, chest protector and throat.

Sword, spirit and balance must come together in a technique in order for the Kendoist to score.  Kendo practice generally lasts two to two and one-half hours and is very rigorous in order to train the reflexes and develop a strong spirit.  Juniors may begin training around six to eight years of age.

Koki Ariga , Seventh Dan, Renshi, is the Sensei for the Miami Valley Kendo Club.  He has been practicing Kendo for about forty years and is one of the best instructors in the country.  Membership in the Monroe Dojo also includes membership privileges at our Dayton Dojo on Harshman Road.

Kickboxing
Kickboxing is a combination of martial arts kicking techniques and western boxing.  Kickboxing is one of the best aerobic exercises for anyone trying to lose weight and is rated as the #1 calorie burning workout.

In addition to aerobic Kickboxing, we offer serious practitioners the opportunity to test for black belt status thru the International United Kickboxing Association.  The novice (non-competitive) status is designed for those individuals who wish to train like a fighter, but who have no desire to fight at the amateur or professional level.  This program is perfect for those individuals serious about getting in shape because it gives them a goal to work towards.   Rank testing is conducted on a periodic basis.

For those interested in competition, amateur and professional affiliation is offered.

Moo Duk Kwan-Taekwondo
Taekwondo is a modern form of an ancient oriental art of self-defense.  In it's original form 1300 years ago in Korea, it was called Tae Kyon, a form of foot fighting.  Through the centuries, hand techniques were introduced and the combination is now called Taekwondo.  The word "Tae" means kicking, "Kwon" means punching and "Do" means the art, or way.  This discipline gained such popularity in recent years that it will be an official gold medal event in the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

Anyone can learn Moo Duk Kwan/Taekwondo.   It has shown to be one of the most effective methods of self-defense and it helps to achieve physical stamina, mental discipline and self-confidence.  Taekwood is especially good for children, helping to mold their emerging personalities.  It gives them a sense of order, courage, discipline and respect for themselves and others.

An extremely good exercise for the whole body, Taekwondo improves flexibility, helps control weight problems and improves coordination.  It also gives you a sense of confidence in your ability to defend yourself in a physical encounter.  Classes are designed to increase aerobic and muscular stamina and to teach proper kicking, punching, self-defense and ground fighting techniques.

Taekwondo can also be an excellent part of an overall program for the developmentally delayed or the physically challenged.

Shootboxing
This is a combination of kickboxing and grappling.  Participants are taught transitional techniques (throws, sweeps, takedowns, ets.) to go from a standing position to ground fighting.
