Nearly 2,000 new homes have been approved or are currently under construction.
Maximum Monroe population is expected to be around 17,000, today it is approximately 10,000.
The Monroe Local School District success has been a major force in drawing new residents to the area.
Monroe Local Schools have struggled to keep up with student growth. Additional classrooms were added to the initial school building plan to make room for more elementary students than planned. The number of elementary students has been disproportionately larger compared with the junior and senior high schools since the inception of the Monroe Local School District.
From 2001 to 2005, the elementary population grew by 300 students; in that same time, the high school gained only 20 students.
The district is considering short-term solutions to overcrowding in the elementary to be implemented in the 2006-2007 school year.
Monroe's near 30% growth rate has caused a financial burden to the schools. Additional teachers have been added to keep classroom size at optimum size. The school board is considering a levy to gap the shortfall.
