Three-quarters of a million dollars will be slashed from the 2003 city budget.
William Brock (Asst City manager) and Jay Stewart (Development Director) are taking on dual roles, temporarily eliminating the City Manager and City Treasurer positions and performing those additional duties themselves.
Additional costs being cut include the postponement of street projects including Gallaher Road; park improvements; professional staff development; purchase of additional communication equipment; and some consulting fees.
Layoffs are not ruled out, however attrition at the police department may reduce some expenses because some officers would not be replaced.
Additionally next years budget may be small due to some contractual obligations being completed.
Council will consider a revised appropriations ordinance that includes the cuts sometime next month.
Even though spending has been cut, an infusion of new funds (property and/or city income tax) through a ballot issue will be considered as a last resort.
