Results of the income tax petition drive and the official committee name will be released at a group meeting to be held today at 8:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Monroe Fire Department's administration building, located at 6262 Hamilton--Middletown Road, State Route 4. The committee, made up of various residents of Monroe, have been attempting to obtain enough signatures to place on the November ballot an issue to remove the 1/2% income tax on earnings of residents who work outside the city and are already paying taxes to those cities. If successful, it would not only reinstate the credit removed by the Monroe council last December, but also prevent any similar attempts to reinstate this tax without citywide voter approval. The committee's spokesman, Thomas Kidd, stated, "the tax repeal committee's name will reflect the goal of the group to challenge the Monroe city officials in establishing a financially responsible budget. The budget has gotten out of hand and they need to be held fully accountable to the Monroe taxpayers." Interested residents of Monroe are invited to attend to hear comments by others present, who have been attending city council and the citizen budget meetings. Anyone desiring to sign the petitions will be given an opportunity to do so, and to ask pertinent questions. If there are enough valid names on the petitions, the committee will indicate when they will be filed and when the actual campaign effort will begin. |
